![]() The first is lyrical and rhythmically intense, spanning 10 bars. Hindemith introduces two themes immediately. The Symphony’s first movement, marked, “Moderately fast, with vigor” is in sonata allegro form. Below, I’ll include my thumbnail analysis of each movement above separate videos of each, all by the world class United States Navy Band. Its three movements use classical and baroque approaches to form and thematic development in Hindemith’s unique harmonic idiom. Hindemith wrote it in 1951 on a commission from “Pershing’s Own” United States Army Band. The Symphony in B-flat is a cornerstone of the wind band repertoire. He was very interested in understanding instrumental technique, to the point that he is said to have learned to play every one of his instrumental sonatas (and there are many, including trumpet, clarinet, trombone, harp, tuba, flute, violin, viola, and bass) on the instrument for which he wrote it. While this approach sounds purely academic, it resulted in playful, accessible music in Hindemith’s hands. He developed his own system of tonality that was not diatonic, but which ranks musical intervals from most-consonant to most-dissonant while still relying on a tonal center. He became an American citizen in 1946, but moved to Zurich in 1953, where he remained for the rest of his life. In 1940, he emigrated to the United States, where he taught primarily at Yale University. During that period, he was invited to Turkey, where he helped to reorganize the music education system there. He grew up and began his career in Germany, but a complicated relationship with the Nazi regime in the 1930s sent him elsewhere. He states that composing for band is difficult because "the agglomeration of instruments is irrational and exasperating". Richard Franko Goldman, a bandmaster himself and a music critic of the mid-20th century, called the piece "singularly dead". This writing takes advantage of the vast color palette that this combination of instruments offers. The contrapuntal textures used by Hindemith throughout the symphony highlight many instruments individually. Drop to the lower level, the walk up the stairs and drop again. Kill the enemy below, then make your way up, deal with the enemy there, wait for the dragon to do another run, then enter the room with the spiral staircase, Instead of heading up towards the salamander, head down. Run as soon as it has, and drop down to the next level. Wait inside, then pop out, tricking it into having another go. From there, you have time to run into a cave on the right just ahead, before it comes back for another go. Run straight across, and when you see it make a fire run for the bridge start rolling into the wall on the right. ![]() It's time for one of Dark Souls' oldest dirty tricks: a massive flipping dragon. Instead of crossing the bridge, go down the dirt path, kill the flame knight and grab the Dragonhead Greatshield from underneath. When ready, head back over the submerged building and to the cliff edge. Kill it to get the Iron Dragonslayer set. Right at the back of this area is a Dragonslayer Armor sub-boss. Now you have nothing to lose, instead of heading back to the cliff path, past the submerged building, head to the far end of the swamp. Run back towards the direction of the bonfire from this vantage point and you'll get to the other side of that locked door, opening up a giant-bypassing shortcut. Once you have that, drop down and run to the part-submerged building opposite, past the knights and to drop down to the cliff hanging over the swamp. At the top, there's a turtle guy guarding an item - the Witch Birch Bow. Once he's down, head to the left side of the room from where he was and up a mud slope, keeping moving to avoid the spells of the turtle dudes. Ahead of you is another of those big guys who summon archers, so you'll want to make a beeline straight for him and cut him down, watching for his wild swings and summoned melee fighters. Just ignore as many enemies as you can, and scoop up the items dotted about. Jumping back to where you are now though, the easiest way to cope with the swamp is the same principle as the long staircase preceding it: leg it. Dark Souls 3 vs Dark Souls 1 Graphics Comparison You may notice, too, that there's an enscription by the bonfire: it's a puzzle, the solution to which we cover in detail over in our page on the Show your Humanity puzzle solution, and how to find the Purging Monument. There are a bunch of items here, but the most pressing is the Ringed Knight Straight Sword, which you can grab by sticking to the right until the area lets you circle back around towards the bonfire.
